RCA to Offer Video Disc of 'Pippin'

RCA Corporation, under an agreement with Sheehan/Elkins Video Venture, Ltd., will release a special production of "Pippin" on its "SelectaVision" VideoDiscs system, it was announced today by Seth M. Willenson, RCA staff vice president, programs and business affairs.

This special production of "Pippin" is being produced specifically for the cable and home video markets. The show, based on Bob Fosse's original Broadway production, is currently rehearsing in New York and will be videotaped in Hamilton, Ontario.

"Pippin" will star Ben Vereen recreating his original Tony Award-winning role of the First Player. William Katt, currently co-starring in television's "The Greatest American Hero," will play Pippin. The cast also includes Chita Rivera. The show is being produced by David Sheehan and staged by Kathryn Dobey.

Mr. Willenson said, "'Pippin' is the first major production put together for the emerging video technologies. 'Pippin' is highly visual, unique entertainment, and it will have strong appeal in the home video market."

The executive producer of "Pippin," Mr. Hillard Elkins said, "'Pippin' is the first production of its caliber to be designed and produced for the market of tomorrow. This deal marks a turning point where cable and home video will no longer be merely ancillary markets for high-quality programs but will become primary sources for program operations."
